I can't control myself laughing when read though this good article: DIE IE - Down with Internet Explorer. If you are web designer or theme developer as what I am, you should have similar feeling. Especially when I am now hosting 4 Drupal themes in parallel, I hate IE6 even more than else before: the standard CSS implementation are often become NOT compatible in IE6; providing IE6 support become my nightmare ;-(
So what can we do for it? Simply educate other users NOT to use IE6 but other better web browsers, e.g. Firefox, Opera or Safari. Or if you are using Drupal for your personal blog and willing to do so, add a custom block within your blog header region by:
- Log into your Drupal blog, and go to "admin/build/block/add".
- When create the new custom block, use "Time to upgrade your web browser" as block description, and left block title as blank.
- Copy and paste the following code snippet into the block body, and use "PHP code" as input format:
<!--[if lt IE 7]><div style="margin: .5em; padding: .5em; color: #f00; border: 1px solid #d77; background: #fcc;">The web browser you are using is ancient and extinct... like the dinosaurs. Internet Explorer Sux (6) is a menace to society and every web designers' worst enemy, not to mention being unsecure and prone to collecting malware. It is also not supported by Microsoft anymore. Please upgrade to <a href="http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/" target="_blank">Firefox</a> | <a href="http://www.opera.com/" target="_blank">Opera</a> | <a href="http://www.apple.com/safari/download/" target="_blank">Safari</a> or any other browser that doesn't suck. It only takes a few minutes and you are doing yourself a favor. To read more about why it is a good idea to stop using Internet Explorer altogether <a href="http://themebot.com/articles/tips-and-tutorials/die-ie-down-with-internet-explorer">Click Here</a> and then scroll down to read the article.</div><![endif]--> - Back to "admin/build/block" and you should able to find your newly created block with description "Time to upgrade your web browser". Put it into your page header region (or some elsewhere).
And that's it! Now whenever someone browse your site with IE6, they will be warned with using a suck web browser :P
P.S. Firefox3 will ready for download on June 17, 2008. Are you ready for that? Let's join and set the record for most software downloads in 24 hours :)
P.P.S. Opera 9.5 already released on June 12, 2008, too. I give a quick try for it: it is fast and stable, but RTL support seems a bit broken (which is totally fine for 9.2)...
P.P.P.S. I try IE8 Beta1, too... But it sucks once again... Layouts which are function under both IE6/7 are broken in IE8, unless running it as "Emulate IE7"... Margin/padding are once again render in wrong style, and RTL support is CRAZILY broken... What's the hell of that!? Oh, Beta2 is coming in Auguest!? So let's forget about buggy Beta1 now...

Corporate
I work in the corporate world and our 'IT' staff hasn't upgraded and has no plans to upgrade in the near future. There are a lot of people stuck like that. They are the ones keeping IE6 alive and healthy.
They will pay for that
When someday they lose their personal information, being hacked, or spend double/triple time for debug a CSS2 validated code which ONLY buggy in IEx, they will understand that keeping IE6 alive can never give us a easy day :p

And on that day…
…they'll probably find some way to blame it all on Firefox-users.
Why the world is not flat!?
...I think they are also interested in blame on this question :(

Despite the IE theming
Despite the IE theming issues, it still loads much faster than FF. I have not delved into the FF code to see why it loads so much slower than IE, but it does. When testing client sites during rollout phases I always test in IE, simply because it loads faster. That is a shame...
Speed is not the only concern
It is usually not too fair to comment any application as faster, unless coming with scientific benchmarking result. I just find this site as useful with up-to-date information: Browser faceoff: IE vs Firefox vs Opera vs Safari.
I will not comment on which browser as the fastest, since this is not my only concern. Stability, functionality, usability, extensibility, security and so on are all essential components when choosing a suitable web browser. From this point of view, Firefox is always my cup of tea. It is even a powerful toolkit and testbed for web developer, especially when combine with Web Developer, YSlow, Firebug, and so on.
Anyway, I am just talking about development phase and my personal preference; when working for production, we are not able to close our eye from the case of real world. Whenever launching a site for production, testing it with FF2/3, Opera9.2, Safari3 and IE6/7 is always my default work flow. BTW, start the work with Acid2 compatible browsers before switching into any browser-specific-hack should always be the most effective and logical development procedure ;-)

I didn't say ditch FF. I
I didn't say ditch FF. I simply said IE is faster (on my machines). That has some value to others. Not everyone is a webdev.
IE will load more quickly
IE will load more quickly than any competitor on Windows because quite a lot of it is loaded by the OS before you even click on the icon - the HTML rendering engine is used by various folder views, for example, and the interface is shared with Explorer (before IE7, anyway).
It's not necessarily a good reason to keep using it, but it is a reason some people might like, along with it being installed on every Windows machine by default.
Opera or Safari for a faster web experience
Well, if you want a fast browser try Opera or Safari.
It's not just the corporate world, here at my university with almost 30,000 students, IT hasn't upgraded their IE6 yet, and to be honest I doubt they've got the skills to be even able to do it.
That's almost as bad as a
That's almost as bad as a "Best viewed in ..."
Sure everyone hates IE6, and I'm still dismayed that 30% of my visitors use that stupid thing. But let's not revert to the bad ol' years when we tell users we are too dumb to make our website look decent in their broken browser so they should change.
The best way to get people off of IE6 would be to gradually phase out support for it on your site and maybe add a FAQ somewhere as to why it looks funny.

Yeah, you can tell people
Yeah, you can tell people that they're using the wrong browser. Or you can learn how to work with IE's quirks rather than against them. In the seven years since IE6 was released, I've come to know most, if not all, of IE6's bugs rather intimately. And in that time I've learned how to write CSS that isn't hackish and works in IE6.
Sure, I still encounter the occasional IE bug and have to spend a few minutes finding a workaround, but I have to do the same thing for Firefox, Safari, and Opera as well. It comes with the territory. But by accepting that IE6 has limitations and bugs, I've spent less and less time fixing IE-specific issues. IE issues probably contribute about two to three percent of my total development time. It's negligible.
Don't get me wrong, I'd still like IE6 to go away as soon as possible to be replaced with IE7 (or even IE8), but browser cycles take a long time and we're not likely to see it dip below that magical 5% barrier for several more years. So if you really want to save yourself some stress, just accept that IE6 has problems and learn how to avoid them in the first place. You'll find you spend less time (and sanity) working around browser bugs when you do.
firefox users
What is wrong with using firefox?
I have to use it
I have to use it at work because no one has bothered to take the time to upgrade the company. I complain bitterly every chance I get but it falls on deaf ears - cost is the only consideration and it is perceived as a huge cost burden to fix something that isn't broken. I have no doubt that IE6 will be with us for many years to come because of this attitude, and its a shame.
IE and Corporate stupidity
I empathasize with the reader/writer who says that corporate has IE installed by default on a lot of machines and consider it a serious cost to upgrade and therefore no upgrades take place.
There are a lot of IT department heads in the middle east and the far east who still think that Microsoft can do no wrong. They won't upgrade or budget time or resources to "fix" something that they don't think is broken.
When they get the security alerts from various places, concerning yet another IE problem, many of them simply say, "Well, we are behind douhle firewalls with non-routable ip addresses so while others may be having a problem, we are more or less protected." That's not entirely true of course but go figure ...
If you use hitbox to review worldwide usage statistics, peek at the stat for the ton of user's still using 800by600 computer screens, it's a good bet that many of these same users are also stuck in a corporate office somewhere using an older version of IE too.
Just me three cents worth.

IE still needed
No, doubt IE loads it self quickly on Windows OS right at your click but still it take ages to load the pages, and can even take up to 2 minuets sometime if the page contains graphics. Where Firefox is very fast. I do not know how to fix IE but apparently the solution can be to use Firefox as my designs look great at it too and crap on Internet Explorer but still I have to use IE as being a designer I want to know how the world see my web design.
Thanks for info!!!!!!
Thanks for info!!!!!!
The problem is
not IE 6. The problem are the people who use IE6. Most of the IE6 Versions are localized in schools and global office`s that never update anything and have to work with the old browser. We should start to help them for an update ;)
Thanks for the info.
FF is slow but has got impressive plugins
The truth is that ff is getting very slow. It changes a little bit from version 2 to 3 but is already a problem. But nobody should forget, that ff has extremly good plugins. IE looks like an old man on the other hand. ;)
